In the recently held 5th t20 match between India and England, the Indian cricket team management decision to promote Kohli as opener paid off and the duo of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli laid the foundation stone for the team with a solid partnership of 94 runs. After the match, Virat Kohli during the press conference said that he would be opening the innings in IPL and he would even look to open with Rohit Sharma in t20 games for India.
However, Rohit Sharma had different idea. About the question of Virat opening in the 5th t20, he said that it was just a tactical move by the Indian Cricket team management. It does not mean KL Rahul would not be considered for opening in t20. Indian greats such as Sunil Gavaskar, Krish Srikant etc have praised this decision. They said that the best batsmen should face the maximum number of balls in a t20 match. It will give the team a good foundation for the likes of Suryakumar Yadav, Pant and Pandya to capitalize in the end.
However, few greats like Michel Vaughn and Devang Gandhi disagree with this. They feel that in a big event like world cup, the team needs some experience in the middle order. If in a game both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli as openers depart early, then it would be difficult for the team to bounce back as the middle order would be less experienced.
It would be very interesting to see how the Indian cricket team management cope up with this situation and play the best team combination when the world t20 starts in October.
