The much awaited Indian premier League, Vivo (IPL) fate is set to be played from September 19 to November 8, 2020 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Senior BCCI officers have told PTI.
While the Tournaments governing council will meet next week to chalk out the final details and approve the schedule, it is understood that the BCCI has informally intimated the franchises about the IPL schedule.
A well-placed BCCI official told PTI on conditions of anonymity, that “VIVO IPL 2020 in all likelihood will commence on September 19(Saturday) and the finale will be held on November 8 (Sunday). It is 51day long fate which will suit the franchises as well as the broadcasters and other stakeholders.”
The IPL has been on the cards by the ICC’s decision to postpone the October-November T20 World cup in Australia owing to the Covid-19 pandemic due to which the host country expressed its inability to conduct the event.
Though there were speculations that the IPL will commence from September 26, the BCCI decided to proponed it by a week in order to ensure the Indian team’s tour of Australia is not jeopardized.
As per the Australian government rules, the Indian team will have a mandatory quarantine of 14 days. It is expected that with each and every team needing at least a month’s time to train, the franchises will be leaving base by August 20 which gives them exactly four weeks’ time to prepare.
It is the sultry conditions in the UAE that have prompted the idea of extending the duration of the tournament by around 10 days. The number of double headers will be reduced and focus will be more on the evening matches.
The Vivo IPL tournament will see a total of 60 matches.
