The first test match between India and England turned out to be disappointing for Indian cricket fans. England won the toss and decimated Indian bowlers while putting 578 runs on board. The captain of England cricket team, Joe Root, made his 100th test appearance special by scoring massive 218 runs for the team. Along with Root, Dan Lawrence and Ben Stokes also delivered promising results for the team. India, on the other hand, struggled to add runs to the board. Joe Root on Friday embarked his name in the 9th position in the batsmen list who slammed a century in his 100th test. Root made his 20th century in just 164 balls. The captain scored his third century against India. Joe Root also became the third player to play his first and 100th test match in the same country he was touring. The skipper played his first test match back in 2012 in Nagpur.
Bumrah Created Early Pressure for England Opening Order
Jasprit Bumrah played a crucial part in the early period of the match. The right-arm fast bowler took two vital wickets for the team to create pressure on the rivals. Bumrah bowled Dan Lawrence for a duck and bowled Dom Sibley. Further, Bumrah bowled Dom Bess and helped India stay in the game.
Indian Bowlers Faced Difficulty in Taking Recurring Wickets
Even after getting early wickets, Indian bowling line-up failed to create pressure on the rival. Among the lot, Shahbaz Nadeem bowled 44 overs and gave 167 runs. England batters made the entire three two days tough for Indian bowlers. Jofra Archer and Dom Bess thrashed the opening batting line-up of India. Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill were bowled by Jofra Archer. Later on, spinner Dom Bess bowled pretty well and took four crucial wickets for the team. Among the lot, the Yorkshire spinner bowled the captain Virat Kohli and received the ultimate satisfaction in his entire career.
Virat Kohli, who was the center of attraction, failed to deliver promising results. He was bowled for 11 runs by Bess. Cheteshwar Pujara and Rishabh Pant Handled India’s Inning
Cheteshwar Pujara and Rishabh Pant, who were the savior for the team in the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2020-21 against Australia, delivered promising results in the opening test match against England. Pujara played 143 delivered and scored 73 runs, whereas Pant scored 91 runs in just 88 balls. Both the players removed some pressure from the team on the third day. Rishabh Pant innings was quick and promising for the team.
The tail-enders yet again turned out to be beneficial for team India. Washington Sundar was on the field along with Ravichandran Ashwin. It is expected that the tail-enders will add more runs to the board for the team and eliminate the follow-on chances.
