The opening test match between India and England turned out to be a nightmare for Indian fans as Joe Root’s led team decimated India by 227 runs to lead the four-match series by 1-0. With the win, England has topped the World Test Championship table with 442 points. England gave a target of 381 runs to India on the fourth day of the first test match at Chennai. However, India was bowled out for 192. Even though skipper Virat Kohli played good cricket in the second innings, he could not manage to lead the team to victory.
Toss Win Was Beneficial for England
England won the toss and opted to bat first. The decision by Joe Root was the key highlight of the entire game. England made most of the early conditions and played sensibly. Both top and middle-order provided support to the team by playing crucial knocks. Captain Joe Root, who was playing his 100th test match, scored a massive double century to increase the pressure on India. Ben Stokes, who entered the field after Dom Sibley, also scored 82 runs and maintained 124 runs partnership with Root to create a big lead for the hosts. England finished its first innings for 578 runs in 190 overs.
Indian Bowling Line-Up Could Not Create Pressure on the Guests
Even though India managed to bowl out England in the first innings, it could not stop England from creating a big score. Virat Kohli used six different bowlers to create pressure on the team, including Rohit Sharma who bowled 2 overs and conceded 7 runs. Shahbaz Nadeem bowled 44 overs and conceded 167 runs with 2 wickets. Overall Indian bowling line-up tried mixed deliveries and strategies but failed to create pressure on England.
India’s Top Order Collapsed in First Innings
The hosts were under a lot of pressure as England created a giant score on board. India managed to score 337 runs in its first innings in sub-continental conditions. Jofra Archer and Dom Bess thrashed the opening order of team India in the entire first match to win the opening test match. Rohit Sharma, who was looked on to ease the pressure from the team, could not manage to add runs on the board. He just scored 6 and 12 runs in the first and second innings of the match.
Pujara and Pant, who were the heroes of the team in the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2020-21 against Australia, stabilized the innings and eliminated the chances of the follow-on. Washington Sundar played good cricket in the first innings. He was not out for 85 runs and helped India reduced the lead along with Ravichandran Ashwin. However, Washington Sundar was bowled for zero in the second innings of the opening test match.
Ashwin and Kohli Delivered Exceptional Performance
Ravichandran Ashwin decimated the batting line-up of England in the second innings. The right-arm spinner took 6 crucial wickets in just 17 overs. Shahbaz Nadeem took 2 wickets in the second innings, whereas Ishant Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah got one wicket each. England was bowled out for 178 runs leaving the target of 381 runs for India in 90 overs.
The captain of team India Virat Kohli, played decent cricket in the second innings. He scored 72 runs with a strike rate of 69.23. However, the skipper failed to get support from the other side. Shubman Gill knocked half-century in 83 balls but was bowled out by James Anderson. In the end, the batting line-up of India was thrashed, and the hosts were bowled out for 192 runs.
Even though India lost the opening test match in Chennai, Skipper Virat Kohli will be looking forward to seal the second test and secure victory. Ravichandran Ashwin, Rishabh Pant, Cheteshwar Pujara who are in good form will be the center of attraction in the second test match. It is also expected that Kohli will make special strategies for the opening batting order to help the team in big trials.
