CPL 2020: Sammy speaks up over training privileges to Trinbago Knight Riders

With less than a week’s time to shoot, the Fun 88 India sponsored CPL 2020 tournament is sensing some tension from outside the ground as several franchises are not happy with Trinidad based players and staff allowed privilege to practice and even remain outside the bio-secure bubble. This is a common procedure adopted by sports organizations all over the globe to keep the players in a sanitized and bio secure zone after travelling from abroad. The players and staff based in the province itself are not mandated to be staying inside the bubble and that they can train while other squads are inside the bubble for more than a week now.

St Lucia Zouks‘ captain Daren Sammy has become critical over the issue and raised his disagreement over social media. He said that everyone should be inside the bubble to make sure the health of others is not compromised, during the time of a pandemic. The players form Trinbago, including Kieron Pollard, Dwayne Bravo, Darren Bravo, Sunil Naraine, lendl Simmons and Jayden Seales are not under strick quarantine and can train.

Along with Sammy, the defending champions Barbados Tridents has also registered their concern with the CPL as why the local contingents are not under the mandatory week long quarantine. The teams and players under quarantine are claiming that the Knight Riders are getting an unfair advantage as a week before practice can come handy during the tournament while the other players weren’t on the ground for months.

To put an end to the concerns, CPL sent out a media release on 11 Aug saying that the local Trinidad players and staff had followed the procedure and cleared the mandatory test process and they would start entering the bubble this week. The tournament operation director Michael Hall has stated that the CPL has been extremely careful about introducing those who are resident in Trinidad and Tobago into the tournament bubble.

Be aware that the protocol directs all team members coming from outside of Trinidad, a strict one week quarantine in hotel room and to join the respective teams only after two negative tests after the quarantine period.
