Ajinkya Rahane received a king’s welcome when he returned home. The interim test captain for India made history at Australia by defeating them and winning and retraining the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the unachievable ground of Gabba, Brisbane. All of the historic wins at Melbourne Cricket Ground, the draw at Sydney Cricket Ground, and the win at the fortress Gabba came under the captaincy of Ajinkya Rahane. Now speculations raise questions that can Ajinkya Rahane replace the full-time Indian test captain Virat Kohli.
As he took over as the captain of India in test after the departure of Virat Kohli after the first test, results for India turned out on a positive note. India suffered a shameful loss in the first test at Adelaide which also happened to be the day-night pink ball test. They were bowled out for 36 by the brutal Australian bowling attack. The score was recorded as the lowest total over scored by India in tests. None of the players could reach a double-figure score. After suffering the shock defeat at Adelaide, Captain Virat Kohli returned home due to family matters.
Eventually, Ajinkya Rahane took over the captaincy and lead India to a historic win at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The captain scored an impressive knock of 112 in the first innings of the test, helping India to achieve a big total, and eventually, his century proved to be the winning point in India’s victory. He was adjudged the man of the match due to his important knock. Even though India was affected by the amount of senior injured players, Ajinkya Rahane was unmoved by that fact and kept believing in the squad depth of the team. He kept on using the ultimate young force which eventually proved to be profitable for the team. By the beginning of the last test, Mohammed Siraj was the most experienced bowler in the Indian unit with a maturity of just three tests under his belt.
Ajinkya Rahane used this inexperienced and young team to his benefit and systematically dismantled the powerful Australian lineup. As the 33rd Indian test skipper, Ajinkya Rahane has the experience of only 5 test matches. In the 5 tests he captained, he has won 4 of them, while drawing the lone test at Melbourne Cricket Ground. But the tactics he used and the measures he implemented, proved his captaincy ability and made him a potential successor after Virat Kohli‘s disappointing run of form.
Throughout three tests, he and his team had faced several racial cases of abuse from the crowd. While they did duly complain to the match officials, they were asked to leave the pitch, so that the game was halted and the umpires could take a closer look at the issue. Keeping the spirit of the game in mind, the captain and his team refused to leave the pitch and continued with the game.
The resilience and brute determination the team showed under the captaincy of Ajinkya Rahane were impeccable and they hope to continue in this manner for the future. Now the biggest question that the test team of India faces is Ajinkya Rahane or Virat Kohli. Experts say that it would help to try out Ajinkya Rahane now and then but Virat Kohli is the safest option and is more experienced in the long run. He also happens to be the most successful test captain India ever had till now. He has the highest win ratio overseas as well as domestically. So it would be wise to keep Virat Kohli as the test captain and also across all other formats.
