‘83’ The story of an unforgettable victory

The 1983 Cricket World Cup(officially the Prudential Cup ’83) was the 3rd edition of

the Cricket World Cup tournament. It was held from 9 to 25 June 1983 in England and Walesand was won by India. Eight countries participated in the event. The 1983 World Cup was full of dramatic cricket all through the tournament. Teams like India and Zimbabwe who were not playing well during those times scored victories over the West Indies and Australia respectively. The format of the 1983 World Cup was 2 groups of four teams, each team playing each other twice. The top two teams from each group then advanced to the semi finals with the winners further advancing to the finals. Every game was of 60 overs with all day matches.

Eight teams qualified for the final tournament (seven full ICC members, including recently appointed full member Sri Lanka, and Zimbabwe, who qualified by winning the 1982 ICC Trophy).

India lift the World Cup after defeating West Indies in the Final but before achieving this Milestone,the Kapil Dev led side went through a pressure situation.

On June 18,1983 Indian team Playing against Zimbabweat Tunbridge Wells in Must Win game. Kapil Dev won the toss and Elect to bat first but Indian top order struggles in the middle.Both Openers Gavaskarand Srikantwent to Pavilion with Duck.

Mohinder Amarnath(5) and Sandeep Patil(1) also back to Pavilion.At one time India were 9/4 then Skipper Kapil dev Came into middle. After that Yashpal Sharma also Departs and Indian were at 17/5.

Then Kapil Dev made 60 Runs Partnership with Roger Binny but in Quick time Binny and Ravi Shastri fell out and at 78/7 Indian team Struggle.

But Kapil Dev had Something else in his mind.He built a 126 runs Partnership with Wicket Keeper Syed Kirmanifor 9th Wicket.Kirmani’s 24 Not Out was Second Highest in that Inning.

In the End India managed to Score 266/8in 60 Overs in which Kapil Dev Scored 175 in the 138 balls Contains 16 Foursand 6 Sixes .With that Hundred Kapil Dev became First Indianto Score Century in ODI Cricket.Mohinder Amarnath became the man of the match. No Man of the series was awarded that year.

In September 2017, Reliance Entertainment and Vibri Media hosted an event to announce the film with the team that had won the 1983 World Cup. The shooting began on 5 June 2019 in England. Although it was scheduled for theatrical release on 10 April 2020, the release has been postponed due to COVID-19 pandemic.The cast and their roles were announced in February 2019. Amiya Dev, the daughter of Kapil Dev, joined as an assistant to the director, Kabir Khan. Mali Marshall was cast to play his father, West Indiesfast bowler Malcolm MarshallComposer Pritamjoined to create an iconic anthem for the film.

The film features actor Ranveer Singh in the role of former Indian skipper Kapil Dev and the story is based on India’s real-life victory at the 1983 cricket World Cup. Ranveer’s wife Deepika Padukone not only stars in the film as his onscreen wife, but she has also co-produced the movie along with Kabir Khan, Madhu Mantena, Vishnu Induri. The film also stars Tahir Raj Bhasin, Saqib Saleem, Harrdy Sandhu, Ammy Virk, Jiiva, Pankaj Tripathi, Boman Irani, Nishant Dahiya, Sahil Khattar, Amrita Puri and more.

Even though ‘ 83’ isn’t going to be released anytime soon, there is already buzz around which actor is going to play which cricketer on screen. Here is all the information we have on the casting so far.
